I have decided to write this article about the downloading of copyrighted material because I think this has got more influence on our society and economy then we realise. Although this subject has got different laws relating to the country that you live in I still find it interesting for people to know what it’s all about. The Illegal downloading of copyrighted material can be related to the term “warez”.
I’m sure most of you have already been leaving to house, heading to a local multimedia store to go and buy one of you favourite albums. In my country the price can easily rise to over 20EUR. And not to talk about the price of games and applications. If isn’t often that you spend under 50EUR to buy a game you would like. I find it rather expensive to pay this much for a game/album that you will only enjoy for a rather short period. This article will be about the alternative source to get these copyrighted materials; the internet!

Before this thing starts I would like to give my point of view in this issue. I believe that the presence of an alternative source to get copyrighted material has got a positive effect on our society. Below I will explain in several arguments why this is my point of view.

First of all the influence of the presence of this copyrighted material on the internet is rather small for the authors of the material. I believe that people first have to be able to test the multimedia they want to buy. This way they have got 2 options. if they find it rather interesting and enjoying they can buy the original material legally at their local store. Otherwise I don’t see the point in buying an album if you only like 1-2 songs on the entire CD. It would be a waist of money. My argument here is that on long-term, if people find something interesting on the internet, they will eventually buy it and this way show their support to the author/creator.

Secondly the presence of this alternative download source is also required to keep away a monopoly and keep a stable economy. Imagine yourself in a world where there would NOT be an alternative source to get your materials. Then the big companies would just control the market of their niche their self. They could ask ANY price they would like for the material and nobody could do anything about it. even if they put up a really high price there will still be people who are going to buy the product. I can give the perfect example here; I think everybody knows what is currently going on with the outrageous price of Oil. The producers of this Oil knows that we, people, countries, nations CAN’T get our oil anywhere else on earth. This is why they have full control of the prices and this is the reason why is so expensive. There is also a major reason because we don’t have an unlimited supply of oil but this it totally irrelevant because I’m talking about the fact that it’s easy to start a monopoly when there is only certain places where you can get this product. IF there wouldn’t be warez , then the big companies and producers would take advantage of this and put the prices up really high.

I hope I made my point clear and for the people who don’t agree with me, I respect our opinion. I live in a free country where freedom of speech is applied so I thought it would be interesting to bring my thoughts to the public.

And in the end, would it really matter if a movie star/artist/company can only buy 5 cars instead of 6?
